Salamanca in the North West of Spain is home to Spain's oldest university (and 3rd oldest university in the world!), so it's a pretty big deal when it comes to history and the education of Spain's young.
Known as 'The Golden City' you can see why it gets it's name once you see all the big sandstone buildings, a lot of which make up the university (along with the standard cathedrals and churches). With it being a big university, the presence of students give this very old a city a vibrant young feel. It's great just to wander the streets, soak up the atmosphere and marvel at the incredible stone masonry and the moorish hand-painted street signs.
